Users of ESRI's ArcGIS software can now view aggregated Map the Spill report data in their native ESRI environments. A REST-endpoint map service is available at:
http://mapservice.mapthespill.org/AGS/rest/
This map service can be used to view/query/report all collected report data including links to the original report (at www.mapthespill.org) and all multimedia content. Content is available within one hour after it is created (or edited) from the Map the Spill mobile/web app.
Map services can be utilized through ArcMap, ArcGIS Explorer, www.arcgis.com, explorer.arcgis.com, and any other web mapping application that can consume external RESTful map services via URL. ESRI does provide a Gulf Oil Spill Impact map (http://bit.ly/c4e7gS) that aggregates data from numerous other sources and can be used as a great starting point for adding the Map the Spill map service.
This new service adds another leg to Map the Spill's mission to make citizen oil spill reports available for scientists and agencies to use in their professional map and GIS programs.
